Moving

We had an excellent experience with FlatRate Moving while packing, moving, and storing the contents of our large apartment in Brooklyn Heights. The entire process was smooth and well organized from start to finish.

Matt, the manager, was extremely professional and coordinated everything flawlessly. His planning and communication made what could have been a stressful move feel completely manageable.

On moving day, Stephen, the foreman, and his team were fantastic—efficient, courteous, and highly professional. They handled everything with great care and kept the process moving quickly and smoothly.

Overall, a truly great job by the entire team. We highly recommend FlatRate Moving to anyone looking for a reliable and professional moving company.

THIS COMPANY WILL LOSE YOUR ITEMS AND DAMAGE MANY VALUABLES

THIS COMPANY WILL LOSE YOUR ITEMS

THIS COMPANY WILL LOSE YOUR ITEMS, DAMAGE AND SEND ANYONE FROM CRAIGSLIST... BE VERY CAREFUL!!!

If I could rate this company -5 i would. This company moved us from Brooklyn to St Louis and it was a complete disaster. Be very careful these guys have absolutely no idea. They lost a huge expensive floor rug, like it never showed up, no apology nothing. Also an antique mirror was missing too. They broke a number of glass items, sent us movers here in St Louis who where chosen from Craigslist, not referenced, these guys made us feel uncomfortable asking us questions about ho much this this item would cost, how much we purchased pur home for, to tip them directly cash and not through FlatRate as they take too much commission and tried to make us call management to release their pay as they wanted to leave without un packing. It was a complete NIGHTMARE. They damaged our walls, we immediately sent images and they accept no responsibility and insult us with $200. The rug alone was over $1500.00 We were asked to lodge a claim and this is what we received:

Claim No: FRNY #1281150

Dear Thomas,

Please accept our sincerest apologies for any inconvenience that you may have experienced with your recent move. I have enclosed copies of your Move Plan.

The results of the claim are as follows:

Rug: 50 lbs

Mirror: 10 lbs

Glass Dome: 25 lbs

Lamp: 25 lbs

Total:

110 lbs

At $0.60 per pound at 110 lbs, your total claim value equals $66.00. Additionally, we are including a courtesy amount of $134.00 for property damage which occurred during the move. Accordingly, enclosed please find a check in the amount of $200.00 serving as a full and final settlement for claim #1281150 filed on 1/17/25.

Awesome awesome awesome

I would say to try this company if you’re moving from New York to another state they are very very professional from the beginning when I spoke to Louis, he did a FaceTime video with me to see exactly what was being moved. They were very very courteous when they came for the move. My move started at exactly 9 o’clock and they finish at 11:15. I would highly recommend them. Thank you flat rate.

Exceptional Service

Everything was terrific. Flat Rate's COI department handled the complicated requirements of both my move-out and move-in buildings; the movers were prompt and professional, finishing even earlier than I requested; and Zuleika (my sales rep) responded to my many questions by text or email always on the same day. And the price was so reasonable, I wonder how they can turn a profit! I would absolutely use FlatRate again anytime I need a mover.

I will be using Flat Rate again.

Lawrence and the team were extremely helpful in preparing me for my move. We had a FaceTime call to properly assess the size, and therefore price, of the items. There were no surprises on my bill. Lawrence even checked in a few days prior to my move to see if I had any changes to my inventory, which I did! Because he checked in, I avoided any confusion on moving day.

Movers Eddy and Javier were professional and efficient. They were extremely careful with my belongings.

Positive and Accommodating service

They are kind and accommodating from start to finish. Moved with them 3 times, Bernard Smith has been our point person for each move, and every time it’s been the same consistent quality of service and attention. First time was a combined move of my now wife’s stuff to my studio and storing her furniture until we found a bigger place.

So smooth, organized and comfortable.

Things always come up in the middle of packing and on move day and these guys just make it work and have a great attitude about it.

Each moving crew was excellent.

Highly recommend them for any moving and storage needs

FlatRate Moving is the best in the business. I used them twice recently and the level of professionalism, courtesy, hard work and value for the money is unbeatable. They moved the contents of my apartment, including valuable art and hundreds of books, along with furniture with great care. Why would you trust anyone else to move your possessions when FlatRate Movers is the very best?

Friendly, Efficient and Quick

Our moving team was friendly, efficient and quick. We had 3 Flat Rate moving staff members moved our items, although I do not remember the team members names they were amazing! They arrived at my home on time, assessed what was being moved, went back to their truck and got the necessary tools and proceeded to quickly and carefully pack all of our belongings. They packed up a 1 bedroom apartment in 2 hours and arrived at the new location quickly (i was moving between boroughs). Unpacking went just as quick and efficiently and we were all moved into the new location within a couple of hours and they unpacked everything with the same care and efficiency that they packed. The support staff were also very helpful, they were quick to provide the COI and had an open line of communication. I recieved text messages, and emails to check in on any updates of the items being moved and the status of the move during moving day. I would highly recommend flat rate moving to my friends and family.

Just finished my 4th move....quick, efficient, easy as always

From first phone call to the end of the move, everything went as smooth as I could have hoped. Everything well-explained, professional, and great moving teams. The move itself (one-bedroom) took about 1.5-2 hrs. Support staff was responsive with quick turn-around on the necessary COI for my co-op, and in following up in all regards. I highly recommend FlatRate.

Do Not Hire FlatRate Moving – A Total Disaster from Start to Finish

Save yourself hours of stress, confusion, and wasted time — do not hire FlatRate Moving. From the very first interaction, this company demonstrated an astounding level of incompetence and disorganization that borders on negligence.

I hired FlatRate to manage a move from Louisville, KY to Asheville, NC, and every phase of the process — from scheduling to delivery — was a complete mess. There was no single point of contact. The job was passed around to multiple people, none of whom had a grasp on even the most basic logistics like pickup times or delivery locations. At one point, your own team couldn’t even tell me where my belongings were in the system.

Communication was abysmal. There were no updates, no automated systems, no proactive outreach. Then — nearly two weeks after pickup — I received a text message at 10:44 PM on a Sunday night, informing me that the movers would be arriving the next morning, unannounced. No warning. No courtesy call. Just a sudden drop-in, as though this level of chaos is normal for your operation.

To make matters worse, the driver spoke only Russian — no English, no Spanish — which made it impossible to communicate basic instructions or clarify anything on-site. How is a logistics company sending drivers on cross-state deliveries with no shared language and no translator or liaison?

This entire experience has been unacceptable. You are running a national moving company with all the professionalism of a fly-by-night Craigslist operation. I would strongly discourage anyone from trusting your team with their possessions — or their time.

Fantastic experience with FlatRate moving!

The team arrived right on time, and from start to finish, they were polite, professional, and incredibly respectful of all my belongings. They took extra care with fragile items, wrapping and protecting everything thoroughly. I was especially impressed by how efficient they were - everything was done quickly but with great attention to detail. Moving can be stressful, but they made the whole process smooth and worry-free. Highly recommend!

Stay Away From Flatrate.

We moved from Manhattan to Queens and Flatrate's representative suggested we use their "ELITE" service as we had some precious things to move, result?.. they damaged artwork and totally cracked the lid of my 1896 Beckstein Grand Piano in HALF, two years later we're still in court trying to get them to pay what is due. The word "sheisters" comes to mind! Did I mention we also took out insurance? The offered us $1500 (and told us we should pay the first $500) for nearly $6000 worth of damage!

Flat rate.

We recently moved to NYC from CT and opted to use Flat Rate. They literally damaged every piece of furniture. They broke our dining room table, king sized headboard, coffee table, hutch, night tables and both dressers. Their policy is to make restitution based on the weight of what was damaged. We were compensated approximately 300 dollars for thousands of dollars in damage. Do not use this company. Hire some guys hanging out at the local [EDIT]. I have moved a number of times in the last 10 years and have never had anything like this.

Flatrate Moving - Gross Negligence in Moving & Inadequate Settlement.

My wife and I moved from New York to San Francisco and used Flatrate Moving to transfer all of our belongings.

Upon delivery, we discovered that our items suffered extensive damage due to gross negligence in packing (see images for subpar packing of kitchen items, etc) and handling. Most notably, the screen of our 60’ Samsung was damaged due to pressure being put directly on the LCD screen itself during packing or transport. Our shoes and various similar articles were left exposed and crammed into closet drawers during transport. We are aware that nothing should be left in drawers during transport. The company extensively violated this policy which resulted in damages. Armchairs worth around $1,200 were delivered shattered into many pieces. Kitchen appliances and dining ware were dumped without protection into boxes. Naturally, cups, glasses [EDIT] were shattered.
Note that we did purchase extra and full coverage protection for situations like these. However, Flatrate Moving has failed to delivery in this regard as well.

We notified Flatrate Moving. They scheduled an appointment with appraiser for a few weeks later. One day before our inspection was to occur, the appraiser called to cancel. This was yet another experience in the unprofessional and unreliable service provided by Flatrate Moving. Our appraisal was delayed another few weeks. It is now 2 months after our move and Flatrate Moving has still not reimbursed us. As a matter-of-fact, they have offered to settle for about one-quarter the cost of our total claim. How did they arrive at this inadequate amount? Flatrate Moving suggested we can replace a 60’ Samsung High Def TV for $399.99 for example. They also suggested we replace the $1,200 armchairs for $127. At no point in my life (even on Black Friday) have I found a deal even close to these suggested replacement values.

Some other examples of Flatrate Moving’s unprofessionalism and overall sketchy business practice are below. I have email documentation of dates and correspondences.

1. Claims Department promised to address claims by end of specific week. They actually addressed it a month later. This has happened twice already.
2. I called 3 times to speak to upper management – one [NAME EDIT] I believe. 3 times I was promised a return call. I still have not been called. Upper management provides no transparency.
3. I called Flatrate Moving’s legal department twice to ask for arbitration documents (they are required to provide arbitration). I emailed this department 3 times as well. I still have not heard back from them. They have thus far refused to provide any information regarding such arbitration.
4. The salesperson we dealt with – [NAME EDIT] – has since disappeared and has offered to resolution.

Long-distance move from New York to Illinois

Damaged several items.

When I arranged this move with the coordinator in NY - who, by the way, was efficient and a pleasure to work with - I told her there were some large and/or oddly shaped items I didn't know how to pack properly. After giving her a complete list of those items, we agreed that the movers would see to them on the day of the move. Everything seemed to go perfectly, and I couldn't have been happier. Until my belongings arrived in Chicago, and I found that the only item of furniture I'd moved - a 3-drawer wood file cabinet, which had survived some 20 years without so much as a scratch - was destroyed, as were 2 cast iron kettlebells and 3 other items. I can't even begin to imagine the kind of force and abuse it took to shatter the outer layer of the kettlebells! It boggles the mind. When all was said and done, my claim was calculated by weight, not value, and I was informed I'd receive $120 for more than $500 in damages. This despite the fact that EVERYTHING THAT WAS DAMAGED HAD BEEN PACKED BY FLATRATE'S MOVERS! When a company does not hold itself accountable for its own employees' negligence, my suggestion is LOOK ELSEWHERE. My biggest mistake in this whole experience - other than hiring Flatrate, of course - was tipping the movers BEFORE I'd unpacked. Had I not done so, I would have at least saved the cost of replacing the items they destroyed. Live and learn.

Long-distance move from New York to Oregon

I'm so upset.

I recently moved cross country with Flatrate, from Brooklyn, NY, to Portland, OR. Yesterday, I started unpacking boxes and many items of jewelry were missing from my boxes. Someone went through two boxes (marked Bedroom/my name--a big mistake) and methodically took everything they thought looked valuable. They had time to open each box and hastily toss everything back inside. One box was even retaped.

I just don't understand how this is acceptable. Damaging things in a move, even losing a box or an item once in a while, sure--it happens. But Flatrate, YOUR EMPLOYEES ARE STEALING your customers' belongings. No business should ever stand for that.

I am waiting to find out what Flatrate is going to do about this. I will be happy to revise this review if they rectify the situation, but this theft overshadows everything else.

Long-distance move from New Jersey to Florida

You'll pay more in the end!

Used Flatrate to move from NJ to FL on a family recommendation. The night before our move we updated the inventory list and the estimate jumped by almost double. Because they did not send someone to the house like other companies, the rate was not guaranteed if the number of boxes rose as we got closer to our move out date. They sent a truck that was too small for the move out and we wound up leaving items or packing our personal cars with the items that did not fit in the truck. Our last mattress was wrapped in plastic and placed between the truck and the lift gate outside in the rain because there was no more room. Stored with them and they delivered to Florida about a month later. Items came off the truck tightly wrapped on pallets with no care taken for boxes marked fragile, glass, or the weight of items. Crew could not stop apologizing for the damage and condition of our belongings and boxes. Thankfully we did not take much furniture with us. They lost my daughter's bicycle, ripped the wheels off a heavy duty tool chest, crushed fragile boxes, and the move-in crew deeply scratched 10 new floor boards we just installed a week earlier. They dragged a treadmill and desk around gouging the floors through the wear layer. We submitted a claim within 2 days with photos and a full explanation. Claims department told me I could use my flooring contractor, but that no claim would be approved until their own contractor verified the damage. We had to wait another week for their furniture restoration company to come and verify the flooring damage and the contractor spent 5 minutes in our home, looked and said the would try to touch up as best as possible vs replace. Never even asked the brand of the flooring. Claim was settled for 50 cents on the dollar as they only covered us for .60/lb based on damaged and lost items. So my daughter's $400 bike was covered at 0.60/lb. The flooring estimate from their contractor was to touch up and fill the scratches rather than replace the boards as needed so their estimate was half of the actual cost. Per their instruction, I appealed my claim and also called their contractor for a copy of the estimate. Contractor would not provide a copy and confirmed they would not be replacing floor boards and were not a flooring company. Just furniture repair. After several attempts to explain and appeal this to Flatrate Executives, my appeal was denied and I was told to expect the original settlement check. The cost of Flatrate versus Mayflower and Allied was within a few hundred dollars at the end of the day and actually cost me more after the damage and claims process. We move every 5 years and this was by far the worst move ever. Don't try to save on the front-end as you may wind up paying more after they deliver. Will be posting photos as well. They have since deleted all of the customer posts on their [EDIT] page unless they were singing praises. I can't even imagine if we had moved more valuable items. The crews moving in and out were all hard-working and nice people. Accidents happen and they were very apologetic. Even they expected their home office would take care of things. Sad to say, but expect 50 cents on the dollar at best.

Long-distance move from New York, NY to Chicago, IL

Yikes!

Do not use this company for long distance moves. I moved from NYC to Chicago in June 2017 and was charged $1500 for the move (30 boxes and 4 big pieces of furniture - wooden chair, bed, dresser and nightstand). The 3 of the 4 pieces of furniture (which were the only things packed by FlatRate) arrived completely destroyed. I filed a claim as I figured it was a disgruntled employee. After multiple emails and phone calls, I was given $250 for my "troubles". I had to purchase a new bed, dresser and chair. If I knew they were going to be so careless with my items, I would have sold them in NYC and not paid them to move the big items! There are a lot of better companies out there that might be a little bit more expensive but will treat your stuff with respect.

Long-distance move from Forest Hills, NY to Bakersfield, CA

Everything was broken.

I found FlatRate Movers in a Google search for my move from NYC to California. I called multiple companies and FlatRate had the cheapest rates by a long shot (red flag?), and seemed to have good reviews, so I booked them. I was not shipping any large furniture items, only some boxes of clothes and a flat screen TV, a glass dinner table, and a large floor mirror. I got a delivery slot of about 2 weeks and was told it would likely arrive in the beginning of the slot. My items arrived on the last day of the slot. Fine, no big deal. Once all my items were brought in, we found the TV had been shattered, the mirror was in pieces and the dining table legs and base were twisted and broken. The driver apologized and called HQ and took photos of my items. The total of damages was $500. Weeks later I got back about $175 for all this trouble. It is my fault that I only paid for the basic insurance but how did all 3 of my fragile items break? My clothing boxes were all ripped up too but thankfully clothing is not as fragile. Lastly, I got an email to review my experience and the website would not even let me rate them anything below 4 stars. I am disgusted with this service and company and this may be the only time I've ever written a bad review for anything. I suggest you all reconsider any long distance move with this company.

Great Experience.

Called for a quote and David stopped by within 2 days to work up a price. The price was extremely fair and I needed to add items and price was reasonably adjusted. They arrived on time and I tracked the truck on the app. My new building is very particular about the insurance coverage and the certificate of insurance was sent immediately after my request. I recommend Flatrate and would use them again in a minute.

Move.

Worst moving experience (of the 20+ moves I have done)!

I had heard good things, but their quality must have deteriorated.

On moving day, an extra $300 service was charged to me that I did not pre-approve (a bookshelf that did not require dismantling as per the virtual tour, was dismantled). Terrible communication between team members.

"Flatrate" is a misnomer.

They agreed to refund the charge.

It never came.

I emailed multiple times.

I eventually had to dispute it on my credit card.

When I unpacked, it was clear that many things were improperly or haphazardly packed.

One of my items (an irreplaceable stone/ceramic Buddha) was severely broken. Its head was severed (see images).

As you can see, the item was barely wrapped, and in a box by itself with nothing else--with lots of room to move. The box was not labeled as fragile, nor was the item packed properly. It's as if it was thrown it into a box with no proper handling or wrapping.

I've yet to receive any followup regarding compensation for this damage. Despite multiple calls and emails.

Terrible customer service.

Brian Nalty as well as the rest of the team have been unresponsive and unprofessional. Laurence Yates (sales) was the only responsive and professional individual--and customer service would not even respond to his requests. That tells you a lot about the company!

This move was highly disappointing on multiple levels. It's clear that there was very little respect for my items.

I had hoped that flatrate would make moving smoother during such a stressful time--but between being overcharged and having an item destroyed, it did very much the the opposite.

Would not recommend AT ALL.

There are many other better companies in NYC.

Local move from New York, NY to Beacon, NY

$3,500 of damaged furniture, movers didn't wear masks!

I hired Flatrate Moving to help me and my partner move from a 1-bedroom apartment in Manhattan to upstate NY on Sunday, Aug. 2, and it was an utter disaster from start to finish. They destroyed nearly $3,500 worth of furniture and framed art through gross negligence--and only offered an insulting settlement of $368.40. They also didn't send professional movers--they sent someone in training! Plus, the movers didn't wear masks during the pandemic.

After showing up late, the movers went on to do an extremely poor job throughout the move. They started by having the driver place my light-colored upholstered couch directly on the NYC sidewalk (no blankets down to protect it) to wrap it in plastic--no regard for potential stains or damage.

They used a shredded blanket (I have a photo of it) to drag an extremely heavy West Elm dresser down the stairs upside-down. When we unwrapped it at the new apartment, every corner of that item was bashed in, there were deep grooves and scratches all over the top, there was paint stripped off from the tape used by the movers, and the movers snapped the hinge off the cabinet door on the side. It was irreparable, and while I've spent more than a week asking the movers to come back and dispose of it (I can't move it myself), Flatrate Moving has yet to take care of this.

They damaged lightweight furniture from Ikea, including a desk, bookshelf, and drawers--items that I could have taken down the stairs and moved myself without damaging. It almost feels like they TRIED to damage these items. The movers also damaged almost every piece of framed art we paid extra to have them pack with care. Furthermore, they tried to balance a 3-month-old Herman Miller office chair on its back (where delicate components for lumbar support have been installed) on top of many boxes in the moving truck. When I asked that they move it to a more appropriate place, they left a giant black thumb-stain which can't be removed. This chair was in perfect condition before they handled it, and now it's stained and the levers don't work properly.

The amount of damage is absolutely unbelievable for this move. I asked the lead mover (Kyle) for an explanation, and he said that the damage occurred because Flatrate Moving didn't send a professional, they sent a "trainee," who handled my items improperly. I have Kyle's response on video, which I will share on YouTube to warn others about this experience.

Kyle summed it up perfectly when he said, "You have a whole lot of damaged items."

Worse yet--these movers almost never wore a mask, even when inside my residences and speaking close to me. We're moving in a pandemic! Wearing a mask is the least they could do, and the lack of this basic precaution shows that Flatrate Moving doesn't give a damn about the health of its customers. My partner and I wore masks throughout the entire move to protect the movers. It is deeply upsetting that they didn't show us the same respect.

We've been working with a variety of people at Flatrate (including sales coordinator Jeff Cadwallader, claims associate Cici Mota, and client relations manager Brian Nalty), and they've been largely unresponsive and unhelpful, despite my partner and I trying to be cooperative and figure out a suitable resolution. I intend to file complaints with the Department of Transportation, the Better Business Bureau, the Department of Health, NYC Dept of Consumer Affairs, the Attorney General, and all other regulatory and consumer watchdog organizations to get the word out about this incompetent company. I'm also going to speak with a lawyer about this situation.

Do yourself a favor--HIRE ANYONE ELSE BUT FLATRATE MOVING. The company promises a "stress-free move," but dealing with them has been the most stressful part of my move.

TERRIBLE customer service.

I had booked a move with FlatRate for last Monday the 17th, but I had to reschedule due to a change of plans. The company policy says that I can reschedule my move up to 48 hours before, so I contacted my representative Bethany on Thursday the 13th to reschedule my move and she answered me saying that she contacted management about the date change. I thought everything was settled until yesterday the truck came - I talked to dispatch and they said there was a confusion and that they would reschedule the move for me. But I keep getting emails saying that my things are in storage (they’re not) and I was charged for a moving that didn’t happen. I emailed and called Bethany, another representative called Nicholas, and customer service several times with no replies from anyone.

Now the only thing left to do is contact my lawyer and try to get my money back. Beware of this company.
